Alternately, Airmen destined to work on the (relatively) new F-35 may find themselves concluding training at Eglin Air Force Base in Florida. But, again, course length may vary. Certifications and Career Outlook With additional training and testing, the Community College of the Air Force (CCAF) Credentialing and Education Research Tool (CERT) tells us crew chiefs may want to look into some of these professional certifications to bolster their resume FAA-Certified Airframe or Powerplant MechanicCertified Aerospace Technician Certified ManagerCertified Production Technician CCAF also offers an Airframe and Powerplant Certification Pro gram that helps airmen get FAA certification using on-the-job experience and online courses. Following a career in the Air Force, crew chiefs may work as aircraft and avionics equipment mechanics or technicians, though the Bureau of Labor and Statistics predicts that field will grow slower than average through 2020. In fact, WHS is intric ately linked to the very fundamentals of a business from top to bottom, including productivity and profits, so a good overall understanding of the big picture is essential. But the WHS professional will also need to be diligent in keeping up to date with regular and complex changes to legislation, whilst remaining ever mindful that the law is only ever a minimum standard rather than a concrete limit. WHS professionals must also be reactive to changes and acutely aware of issues in the workplace, and constantly assessing how existing arrangements are working in practice and how they can be continuously improved. 3. People skills When it comes to a thriving business, most research identifies people as the most valuable resource. So for a career in WHS, it is absolutely crucial that the professional not relates well and easily to people and builds a rapport quickly. This means superb listening skills, being readily able to empathise and take action, and being open to suggestions an d willing to see something from another point of view. A key people skill with regard to WHS is patience, particularly in getting staff to understand its importance and often breaking through in the face of resistance, whilst another is earning trust and respect, as WHS is a truly collaborative effort. 4. Communication As WHS is primarily about looking after people and ensuring that they are safe, communication in all its forms is vital for an effective WHS professional. While specific and detailed knowledge about legislation, principles and procedures is important, its also crucial that the WHS professional be able to confidently and actively communicate about health and safety in a variety of situations, using a range of verbal techniques including clarity, having authority and confidence but exercising humility and openness, and knowing when to stop and listen. Written communication is also important, not only for writing reports and policies but also to effectively inspire ot her staff to understand the importance of WHS and become actively engaged in it. 5. Leadership Real WHS leadership is not just showing people what to do and how to do it its about changing and moulding behaviours by fostering a culture focused on workplace health and safety, and how it must be continuously monitored and improved. This kind of leadership means that rather than people being told or ordered what to do, everyone at every level is united for the common good of creating and maintaining a safe and healthy work environment, and working constructively and collaboratively to make it better. A culture far exceeds a mere enforcement of policies, and can only be established by those who explain and instil values and lead credibly by example, having gained legitimate respect and being responsive when changes are needed. We all have ideas of the stereotypical police officer. Sometimes, hes grossly overweight. Other times, hes ridiculously muscular and wearing a shirt three sizes too small. Police stereotypes are as common as they are diverse some are unrealistically negative others are in the other direction.Police are ill-tempered macho men who love guns and fast cars, or theyre innocent benign Barney Fife types. Theyre fatherly Irishmen or hard-charging and overbearing control freaks who wont tolerate even the slightest hint of disrespect. Stereotypes of cops, both positive and negative, have been around for as long as there have been police. How true, though, are ansicht stereotypes and where did they come from? Heres a look at a few popular stereotypes, their origins, and their realities. Cops Love Doughnuts Probably the best known and by far the most overused stereotype of police officers is their apparent affinity for those sugary fried confections that many officers lovingly call energy rings. This stereotype is so pervasive that many officers will refuse to park their patrol car anywhere near a doughnut shop for fear of perpetuating the belief that cops and doughnuts go together like peanut butter and jelly. Why is it, though, that this leidion is so widely held?In short, its because even today, its not uncommon to see several police cars parked in front of the local doughnut shop. The truth behind the myth, though, has nothing to do with doughnuts. In reality, its all about the coffee. Quite often, the only distributionspolitik available to get coffee or to take a break at 300 AM isthe doughnut shop because thats the only place thats open 24 hours a day.Doughnut shops became the place officers assemble because of the coffee. Cops Have Quotas Its a widely held belief that police are mandated to make a fixed number of arrests and issue a fixed number of tickets. Many people dismiss the fact that they received a ticket as just another officer trying to make his quota. Do cops have quotas, though? The answer is most casesis no. Police generally do not have set numbers of citations and arrests they must make. At the same time, though, its easy to see where the perception comes from. The ambiguity arises in the question of accountability.Like any other job, there has to be some measure in place to ensure that officers are working. The easiest and most logical way to measure wertzuwachs is to look at the number of tickets written, reports taken, calls responded to and arrests made. If one officer has issued only a few tickets over a certain period when most other members of his department have issued 100 each, supervisors may question what hes been doing with his time. Of course, this may seem to you like a difference without a distinction, but its a significant difference. Few departments set numbers and quotas. At the same time, its expected that officers are working and not wasting time and taxpayer money. The Old Irish Officer Especially prevalent in older films and cartoons, the stereotype of the Irish cop was a popular one almost since the inception of professional policing in America.This stereotype is grounded in fact. In the early days of professional policing, the job of an officer was not the respected pillar of the community as some view it today.Now widely regarded as heroes, police in the early days were looked upon as thugs. They were not at all well respected. Because of this, police employment was one of the few areas where Irish immigrants were able to find jobs. Ironically, just as a majority of police officers were Irish, so too was a majority of those arrested. The van police use to transport large numbers of suspects received its derogatory nickname, the Paddy Wagon, from the perception that it was at one time ful l of Paddies, derogatory slang forIrish. Perception Becomes Reality These are a few of the stereotypes that accompany cops and criminal justice careers in general.As is often the case, realities generate their own perceptions which, in turn, beget their own perceived realities. Rewrite in process is usually found to be an excuse for not going on. It also interferes with flow and rhythm which can only come from a kind of unconscious association with the material.3. Forget your generalized audience. In the first place, the nameless, faceless audience will scare you to death and in the second place, unlike the theatre, it doesnt exist. In writing, your audience is one single reader. I have found that sometimes it helps to pick out one person - a real person you know, or an imagined person and write to that one.4. If a scene or a section gets the better of you and you still think you want it - bypass it and g o on. When you have finished the whole you can come back to it and then you may find that the reason it gave trouble is because it didnt belong there.5. Beware of a scene that becomes too dear to you, dearer than the rest. It will usually be found that it is out of drawing.6. If you are using dialogue - say it aloud as you write it.
